Rabbinic Reflection -June 05

June 2005 - Iyar * Sivan 5765

Two important educational celebrations will occur in June in our congregation.  Judaism has always stressed the importance of learning and valued lifelong education.  On constant theme throughout our history has been and continues to be learning for its own sake.  Long after formal education ends, continuing to learn about Judaism improves our capacity to expand our horizons. Furthering our knowledge enables us to grow and live more fully as adults.

Nearly two years ago, three adults began an educational journey, studying Jewish history, holidays, customs, Jewish Bible, Reform Judaism, Hebrew and other current topics.  The three members of the congregation discussed with me how their educational journey tied spiritually to Judaism. Meeting every Sunday during the Religious School year, these dedicated adults were committed to learning more about Judaism.  Lively questions and arguments became commonplace each Sunday morning.  None of the three women had a Bat Mitzvah.  Just as importantly, the class became more than a group of students, but an extended family.  The class became a welcomed part of their regular weekly routine and they did everything possible to make sure they were in attendance.

On June 4, these three women, Kimberly Cwynar, Terri Mount and Maryann Reizner – will celebrate their B’not Mitzvah.  I invite all members of the Temple to rejoice with them in their accomplishment.  Each member of the class has experienced a spiritual and educational journey, which will be commemorated at this service.

On June 10th, at Shabbat services, Jacob Schwartz will conclude his formal religious education when he celebrates his Confirmation.  He has attended Religious School for more than a decade and will affirm his commitment to continue his search for Jewish knowledge.  Jake will lead the services, chant the blessings over the Torah, read from the Torah and deliver a sermon.  To add to the simcha of his Confirmation, his sister, Sydney Anna Rosenberg, will be named from the Bimah, making this a double Mitzvah for the family.

Congratulations to the B’not Mitzvah class members and to Jacob Schwartz on his forthcoming Confirmation.  All of them have enriched me by the opportunity to know them and work with them during their spiritual journey.
